Where Democrats and Republicans hang out on Reddit
We followed 37,268 regulars of Democratic and Republican subreddits through a year of Reddit. Their #1 community is the same. Below the top three, they barely share a room.
By KissMyPost ResearchPublished Data through September 20266 min read
Short answer
Outside their own political subreddits, regulars of Democratic and Republican subreddits both spend the most time in r/AskReddit: 70% of Democratic regulars and 38% of Republican regulars commented there between October 2025 and September 2026. The Democratic top three is r/AskReddit, r/politics and r/pics. The Republican top three is r/AskReddit, r/SipsTea and r/mildlyinfuriating. Away from politics they split along everyday lines: r/atheism, r/electricvehicles, r/BlueskySocial and The Daily Show lean Democratic; r/Christianity, r/f150, r/grok and Gutfeld! lean Republican. Only 1.6% of partisan commenters wrote in both camps' subreddits.

Who counts as a Democrat or a Republican here
- We didn't ask anyone how they vote. A "Democratic regular" commented or posted in at least one of 7 Democratic subreddits in 2 or more different months of the year, and never in a Republican subreddit. A "Republican regular" did the same in 8 Republican subreddits and never in a Democratic one.
- That gives 15,006 Democratic and 22,262 Republican regulars. Known bots are excluded.
- These are the most politically vocal users on Reddit, not all voters. Do not read the camp sizes as Reddit's political balance.
The top three for each camp

Both lists start with r/AskReddit. For Democratic regulars, r/politics is #2 (61%); for Republican regulars, it is at 16%. Republicans talk politics in their own rooms: 3.8% of everything Republican regulars wrote went to Republican subreddits, against 0.8% for Democrats in Democratic ones.
Democrats roam twice as widely
The median Democratic regular commented in 122 different subreddits during the year; the median Republican regular, 57. So raw percentages make almost every subreddit look Democratic. To find the real lean we divide each subreddit's Democratic-to-Republican ratio by the typical ratio across all large subreddits (2.13). A lean of 1 means the subreddit is as Democratic as Reddit at large is for these users; 3 means three times more Democratic than expected; 1/3, three times more Republican.

Share of each camp's comments and posts that went to subreddits of this topic. Only topics where the camps differ by a quarter or more are shown; all are in the CSV.
Republican regulars put about 1.5 times the share of their activity into Sports, Games and Vehicles (0.69, 0.66 and 0.67 Democratic-to-Republican ratio). Democratic regulars put 1.8 times the share into Art and 1.5 times into News & Politics. Food & Drinks, Technology and Wellness are even (ratios 0.97 to 0.98).
The political bubbles
- Democratic: r/Defeat_Project_2025 (658 regulars); r/VoteDEM (526 regulars); r/Fuckthealtright (1,062 regulars); r/LincolnProject (596 regulars); r/WelcomeToGilead (595 regulars).
- Republican: r/libsofreddit (2,083 regulars); r/ConservativesOnly (409 regulars); r/LibTears (728 regulars); r/EndWokeism (461 regulars); r/MadLiberals (554 regulars).
In these, the other camp is close to absent: under 1% of the other camp's regulars wrote in any of them.
Only 1 in 60 cross the line
1.6% of 117,287 partisan commenters wrote in both camps' subreddits. One caveat: r/Conservative lets only flaired users comment in most threads, which keeps the number down.
What this means if you market on Reddit
- Audience, not politics. A brand selling trucks, tools, gold or shooters finds a Republican-leaning crowd; electric cars, home decor, comedy and science find a Democratic-leaning one. Picking subreddits by topic alone misses this.
- Neutral ground exists. r/AskReddit-style communities hold both camps (the list). Where the camps split, the everyday pairs and topics show how.
- Pick the room, then the time. Once you know the crowd, see when to post, how crossposts grow a subreddit and who writes in each subreddit by age and gender.
- See who else is in any subreddit. Find Subs ranks subreddits by how close they are to one you name, and Audiences shows who is in a set of them.
How this was measured
Data: Reddit posts and comments from October 2025 to September 2026 (KissMyPost dataset of public Reddit posts and comments back to 2005). Bots on the known-bot list are excluded. Thresholds come from the data: 2 or more months of the year to count as a regular, so one-off visitors are left out; 1,000 combined regulars for the typical ratio; 300 regulars on the leaning side for the lean lists. 114,667 subreddits were measured and 2,633 of them are in the CSV.
Limits: only people who comment or post are visible, not lurkers. Subreddit topics come from the KissMyPost taxonomy, and subreddits created after June 2026 are not in the topic tables. Camps are defined by subreddits, not by self-reported vote.
