What Places Atlas does
Map and ranked list
A heat map shows where the talk concentrates. Beside it, the places in view are ranked from #1 down by how many redditors mentioned them.
Search a place
Look up a city or a single place by name, or choose a country and a city to start from.
Food, Coffee & drinks, Nightlife and more
Filter by type: Food, Coffee & drinks, Landmarks, Parks & outdoors, Nightlife, Stay, Shops and Areas.
Hide chains
On by default, so local places aren't buried under chain branches. A chain is counted across its whole state, not branch by branch.
City pages
Best food in Seattle, according to Reddit, and the same for every other category: a city's top 10 places, each with a quote, and tabs for the rest.
Place pages
What redditors say, sorted by usefulness; Who points here, the subreddits whose members mention the place most; and Nearby on the map.
How Places Atlas works
Pick a city
Search for it, or choose a country and then a city. The map and the ranked list fill in together.
Narrow it down
Choose a type such as Food or Coffee & drinks, and keep Hide chains on to see local places first.
Read why
Open a place to read what redditors said about it, which subreddits point to it and what else is nearby.
Who uses Places Atlas
Travelers planning a trip
People moving to a new city
Local SEO and hospitality marketers
What Places Atlas doesn't do
Here is what it won't do, so you know before you start.
- Mentions, not endorsements: complaints count the same as praise, and the rank is not a quality score.
- Food, drink, nightlife, sights, parks, shops, places to stay and neighborhoods only. Services such as plumbers, dentists or lawyers aren't in it.
- No month-by-month trend: each number is a total over about six years.
- No alerts, no exports and no side-by-side comparison with competitors.
- Place names are matched to a public places database automatically, so some matches are wrong, and a few city lists still include streets or common phrases.
Places Atlas: common questions
Is there a map of Reddit restaurant recommendations?
Yes. Places Atlas maps the restaurants, cafes, bars and other places redditors mention in 49,416 cities, ranked by how many different redditors pointed to each one. It is free and needs no sign-up.
How do I find the best restaurants in a city according to Reddit?
Open Places Atlas, pick the city and choose Food. The list ranks places by how many redditors mentioned them over about six years; open one to read what they said. A high count means talked about, not necessarily loved.
What does the number next to a place mean?
It is how many different redditors mentioned the place, added up across subreddits, so one person in two subreddits counts twice. Chains are counted across their whole state, not per branch.
Is Places Atlas free?
Yes: free, no sign-up, no card. Open the map and pick a city.
Does Places Atlas include plumbers, dentists or other local services?
No. It covers food, coffee and drinks, nightlife, landmarks, parks, shops, places to stay and neighborhoods.
Can I see how mentions of a place changed over time?
Not in Places Atlas: each number is a total over about six years. Historical search, part of every KissMyPost plan, shows how talk about a name moved over time, back to 2005.
