Ukrainian Reddit in numbers: who writes in Ukrainian, and how its developers talk about AI

Ukrainian-language Reddit from 2014 to September 2026: how many people write in Ukrainian, how Russian left Ukrainian subreddits, where the community lives now, and how Ukrainian developers talk about AI and vibe coding.

By , KissMyPost ResearchPublished Data through September 202610 min read

Short answer

12,693 people wrote at least one post in Ukrainian on Reddit from January to September 2026, against 2,651 in all of 2022, almost five times as many. In r/ukraina, once the main Ukrainian-language subreddit, Russian fell from 78% of posts in 2014 to 13% in 2021, before the full-scale invasion, and the communities that appeared since are written almost only in Ukrainian. The largest Ukrainian-language community is now r/reddit_ukr, started in 2024. Ukrainian developers in r/ukraine_dev mention AI in 10.8% of comments, against 22% in r/ExperiencedDevs, but they are only now picking up "vibe coding", after it peaked in Western developer subreddits.

How many people write on Reddit in Ukrainian

I took every Reddit post from 2014 to September 2026 that a language detector confidently marked as Ukrainian and counted the people behind them. In 2021 it was 1,522 people. In 2022, the year of the full-scale invasion, 2,651. Then the number kept climbing: 6,263 in 2024, 9,340 in 2025 and 12,693 in the first nine months of 2026 alone.

Reddit itself grew over these years, so the fairer measure is the share. In 2021 there were 56 posts in Ukrainian per million Reddit posts. In 2026 there are 177, about 3.1 times as many. In absolute terms Ukrainian is still a small language on Reddit, 0.02% of all posts, which is why it rarely gets written about.

How Russian left Ukrainian subreddits

In 2014 almost all Russian in Ukrainian subreddits was in one community. r/ukraina, the main Ukrainian-language subreddit at the time, had 12,425 posts in Russian that year, 98% of all Russian posts in the subreddits I checked. It is also the only big bilingual Ukrainian subreddit active through the whole period, so it shows people switching language without new communities changing the picture.

In r/ukraina, Russian went from 78% of posts in 2014 to 49% in 2017 and 13% in 2021. Most of the switch happened before the full-scale invasion. In 2022 the subreddit filled with English (71% of posts) as the world started following Ukraine. Since then r/ukraina has shrunk from 5,331 posts in 2021 to 623 in January to September 2026, and 14% of what is still posted there is in Russian.

Across all the main Ukrainian subreddits together, the drop looks even steeper: 64% of posts in Russian in 2014, 0.9% in 2026. Most of the recent part of that drop comes from new communities rather than from people switching. r/Ukraine_UA (since 2020), r/reddit_ukr and r/ukraine_dev (2024) and r/RedditUATalks (2025) are written almost only in Ukrainian, with 2% or less in Russian, and they now hold most of the posts. Counted in posts, Russian went from 12,624 in 2014 to 749 in 2021 and 308 in January to September 2026.

Where Ukrainian Reddit lives now

Another way to see the growth is to count communities. In 2014, 9 subreddits had at least one post in Ukrainian a month on average. In 2021 there were 38, in 2024 44, in 2025 99, and in January to September 2026 already 161. Of those, 57 are mostly written in Ukrainian; in 2021 there were 4.

The old hub is fading. r/ukraina, a mixed-language community, had 5,246 posts in Ukrainian in 2020 and 460 in the first nine months of 2026. Its place went to r/reddit_ukr, which started in 2024 and had 13,081 posts in Ukrainian in 2025, more than any other subreddit. r/ukraine_dev, for Ukrainian software developers, also started in 2024 and grew to 1,013 posts in Ukrainian in 2025.

Most of the top Ukrainian-language communities are about everyday life, not news: food, art, photography, games, books, personal finance, PC building and software.

How Ukrainian developers talk about AI

r/ukraine_dev is the largest Ukrainian IT community on Reddit, with about 3,400 comments a month in Q3 2026. I counted comments that mention AI or AI coding tools by name, in Ukrainian or English: AI, ШІ, ChatGPT, GPT, Claude, Cursor, Copilot, Gemini, Codex, LLM, neural networks, vibe coding. For comparison I ran the same count on four big English-language developer subreddits.

In r/ukraine_dev the share moved between 4% and 9% in 2025, then rose every quarter of 2026, from 6.0% in Q1 2026 to 10.8% in Q3 2026. That is still below Western developers: 22.1% of comments in r/ExperiencedDevs, 14.3% in r/cscareerquestions and 14.5% in r/webdev in the same quarter.

The dip in the second half of 2025 is growth, not a change of topic: r/ukraine_dev went from 3,362 comments in Q2 2025 to 11,659 in Q4 2025, and the number of comments that mention AI still rose, from 294 to 444. The conversation widened faster than AI talk grew.

Is vibe coding over?

On Reddit as a whole, the phrase is past its peak. Posts with "vibe coding" in the title reached 140 per million posts in March 2026 and fell to 92 in September 2026, 35% lower. Titles that name AI coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot, Codex, Windsurf, Lovable, Bolt) peaked later, in April 2026.

Western developer subreddits show the same turn. In r/webdev, vibe coding came up in 19.1 of every 1,000 comments in Q1 2026 and 11.2 in Q3 2026; in r/programming, 16.5 and 5.0. r/ukraine_dev is going the other way: 3.6 per 1,000 comments in Q4 2025, 15.0 in Q3 2026, more than any of the Western subreddits in this comparison. From January to September, comments there that mention "vibe coding" or "вайбкодинг" went from 44 in 2025 to 294 in 2026, while all comments grew from 14,063 to 30,435.

My reading: the buzzword is wearing off where it started, while AI-assisted coding itself is becoming ordinary. Ukrainian developers came to the conversation later and are in the middle of it now.

What this data can't tell you

  • How many Ukrainians use Reddit. These are people who post. Far more only read, and some Ukrainians on Reddit write only in English.
  • Comments in Ukrainian. Language is detected for posts only. A person who only comments in Ukrainian is not counted in the first chart.
  • Mixed posts. Very short titles can be misread by the language detector, so a small share of posts counted as Ukrainian are mixed or Russian.
  • Bots. Accounts are counted as they are; automated accounts are not removed from these numbers.
  • What people think of AI. A mention is counted the same whether the comment praises AI, complains about it or asks a question.

Method

Language

Each post (title and text together) gets a language from two standard language detectors, and only confident answers (0.7 or higher) count. "Posts in Ukrainian per million" divides by all Reddit posts in the same year. 2026 covers January to September; all counts come from one set of queries run on October 29, 2026.

Ukrainian subreddits

The language chart uses a fixed list: r/ukraine, r/Ukraine_UA, r/ukraina, r/reddit_ukr, r/Kyiv and r/kyiv, r/Lviv, r/Kharkiv, r/Odessa and r/odessa, r/Dnipro, r/ukraine_dev, r/UACommunity and r/RedditUATalks. Shares are of posts detected as Ukrainian, Russian or English. r/Ukraine_UA appeared in 2020, r/reddit_ukr and r/ukraine_dev in 2024 and r/RedditUATalks in 2025, so the combined shares mix a change of language with a change of which communities exist; r/ukraina, active the whole period, shows the change of language alone.

Counting Ukrainian-language subreddits

A subreddit counts for a year if it had at least 12 posts in Ukrainian (9 for January to September 2026), about one a month. "Mostly in Ukrainian" means Ukrainian posts are at least half of all its posts that year. Subreddits where most posts are marked 18+ are left out.

AI and vibe coding

Comments in r/ukraine_dev, r/ExperiencedDevs, r/cscareerquestions, r/webdev and r/programming from Q1 2025, matched on whole words so that, for example, "ШІ" doesn't match inside other Ukrainian words. r/ukraine_dev started in November 2024, so the series starts with the first full quarter. Reddit-wide vibe coding counts use post titles from February 2025.

Questions people ask

How many people use Reddit in Ukrainian?

12,693 people wrote at least one post in Ukrainian from January to September 2026, against 2,651 in 2022 and 1,522 in 2021. Many more read without posting or write in English.

How many Ukrainian subreddits are there?

In January to September 2026, 161 subreddits had at least one post in Ukrainian a month on average, and 57 of them were mostly in Ukrainian. In 2021 the numbers were 38 and 4.

What are the biggest Ukrainian subreddits?

By posts in Ukrainian in 2026: r/reddit_ukr, r/food_ua, r/RedditUATalks, r/Ukraine_UA, r/art_ua. r/ukraine is far bigger overall but doesn't make this list: few of its posts are in Ukrainian.

Is Russian still used in Ukrainian subreddits?

In the new Ukrainian subreddits, hardly at all: 2% or less. In r/ukraina, the original bilingual hub, 14% of posts in 2026 were in Russian, down from 78% in 2014. Across all the main Ukrainian subreddits together it is 0.9%, mostly because the new Ukrainian-only communities now hold most of the posts.

Is vibe coding dying on Reddit?

The phrase is: titles with "vibe coding" fell 35% from March 2026 to September 2026, and mentions are down in r/webdev and r/programming. In Ukrainian r/ukraine_dev they are still rising.
