Reddit glossary

What does OP mean on Reddit?

OP stands for original poster: the Reddit user who created the post. Replies from OP are marked in the thread, and people use the term to refer to the author, as in "OP asked about shoes". Some communities also use OP for the post itself.

Updated KissMyPost Research

10.6%

of 2025 comments were written by the post's own author

That is 411.5 million of 3.86 billion comments.

Source: KissMyPost, all Reddit posts and comments created in 2025: 494.3 million posts and 3.86 billion comments.

In the comment section, OP's name carries an OP label so readers can find the author's answers. Moderators sometimes ask OP to add details or flair, and a deleted account leaves only [deleted] in place of OP.

OP replies change how a thread goes. A poster who answers early keeps a discussion alive, and many posts get no reply from OP at all.

Across Reddit, comments from OP are about one in ten, which fits a conversation where OP answers many people.
