What is a shadowban on Reddit?
A shadowban is a Reddit sanction that makes your posts and comments invisible to other people while you still see them as normal. Reddit applies it at account level, usually after spam or rule-breaking signals, and it sends no notice.
Updated KissMyPost Research
7.9%
of 2025 posts were removed by Reddit itself
Moderators removed 5.9% and AutoModerator filtered 2.4%. Removal by Reddit covers more than shadowbans, such as spam filters.
Source: KissMyPost, all Reddit posts and comments created in 2025: 494.3 million posts and 3.86 billion comments.
The signs are silence: no votes, no replies, and your profile shows as not found when you open it while logged out. Posts removed by a subreddit's own filter look similar, so a single missing post is not proof of a shadowban.
To check, open your profile in a private window. If it loads and shows your recent posts, you are not shadowbanned. If it says the page does not exist, you are, and the way back is an appeal to Reddit.
Reddit removes a lot of content before any human sees it. These are not all shadowbans, but they show how much happens out of sight.
Common questions
How do I know if I am shadowbanned?
Open your profile in a private window. A page that does not exist means a shadowban. A normal profile means you are not.
Is a shadowban the same as a subreddit ban?
No. A subreddit ban applies to one community and you are told. A shadowban applies to the whole account and you are not.
How often does Reddit remove posts?
In 2025, Reddit removed 7.9% of posts by itself, more than moderators did (5.9%).
